The LSU Tigers football team had plenty of cause for optimism heading into the offseason, after demolishing Georgia Tech in the Chick-Fil-A Bowl to end the 2008 season.
Jordan Jefferson looked every bit the role of a competent starting quarterback and showed some serious upside for the Tigers with his physical tools from under center.
The Tigers have even more cause for optimism, as summer workouts come to a close and fall practice starts up this week. Jefferson has added some size and weight and figures to be an even bigger force during the 2009 season.
"He's bigger and stronger than he's been," head coach Les Miles said at the SEC Media Days. "In my opinion, the experience that he had in his true freshman year will benefit him tremendously."
Initial reports out of LSU's summer workouts would indicate the same thing. Jefferson has really developed quickly and has a good understanding of the playbook after only a year in the Tigers' program.
He is confident and poised and ready to help the Tigers erase the memories of the 2008 season. The coaching staff has firmly placed their belief on the young man's shoulders and he is ready to carry LSU this season.
"Offensively, certainly we'll be better," Miles said. "I can tell you that Jordan Jefferson will take the field with a lot more experience and comfort with what we expect of our quarterback."
That should serve as a warning to the rest of the SEC West. If Jefferson plays like he did against Georgia Tech all year long, the Tigers should instantly become contenders for the Southeastern Conference title and potentially even a darkhorse contender for the national title.
With new defensive coordinator John Chavis coaching an improved defense, the sky is the limit for the Tigers if Jefferson can play as big and as strong as he has gotten over the summer.
