After a disappointing season, LSU finally reminded college football fans across the country why they are the defending National Champions.
Plagued by defensive woes all season long, most in the college football world expected the Tigers to struggle mightily against the lethal triple option employed by Georgia Tech. However, the Tigers clearly came in focused and well prepared, something becoming synonymous with head coach Les Miles and bowl appearances.
LSU got off to an early start, scoring on their first possession of the game on a powerful two yard run by Charles Scott. The seven points turned out to be much more than LSU would need to win the game in the end. But the triple option met early success for the Yellow Jackets, who answered LSU's touchdown with a long drive near the end of the first quarter. Scott Blair capped the 13 play, 60 yard drive with a 24 yard field goal, Georgia Tech's only points of the night. The Tigers then took over with a 28 point second quarter, to take a 35-3 halftime lead. Scott started off the scoring explosion from the Tigers with another touchdown run, this time from four yards out. LSU then recovered a surprise onside kick but the drive stalled quickly and LSU was forced to punt. But Georgia Tech's return man fumbled the return and Scott followed up the turnover with his third touchdown of the day, this time a one yard carry. Jordan Jefferson found tight end Richard Dickson for a 25 yard touchdown score minutes later and Keiland Williams added the final touchdown of the quarter for the Tigers on a 17 yard run. Kicker Colt David added a 53 yard field goal in the third quarter to give the Tigers the 38-3 win. True freshman quarterback Jordan Jefferson had a terrific outing in his first bowl start. He finished with 16 completions on 25 attempts for 142 yards and a touchdown. He also rushed for 25 yards and was named the game's offensive MVP. Head coach Les Miles is now 4-0 in bowl games at LSU and the Tigers have never lost in the Chick-Fil-A Bowl.
