What do you guys think about this, seems like the potential for an economic boost to the university would be present. At a time when all schools are suffering budget cuts, I think it is wise to not only make use of a rabid fanbase, but produce what is seemingly an every man product.


Students typically don’t use beer for educational purposes, but that could change soon.
Chancellor Michael Martin said he is commissioning the development of a tentative business plan for a microbrewery to be housed at the Lod Cook Hotel on campus.

John Finley, chair of the Food Science Department, said he has developed tentative formulations for potential beers to be produced at the brewery.

“Initially we would make a traditional lager,” Finley said. “We would make a light beer because frankly a lot of women prefer light beer, and that is a very lucrative market. And then we would make some sort of a amber or dark beer, which will be purple.”

The brewery could create a purple and gold beer similar to the black and tan, which uses Guinness and a traditional light lager on top, Finley said.

Hypothetically the brewery would not only service customers at Lod Cook, but the brews could also be sold around the region.

There are multiple legal hoops the brewery would have to clear to make the project possible, but it is viable, Finley said.

He said the brewery has a substantial startup cost, and as an addition would have to be built on Lod Cook to house it, so a sponsor would be needed to provide the capital for the venture.

Martin said the Mockler Beverage Company, a Anheuser Busch distributor, has signaled interest in a partnership for the brewery.

Excited about the idea, Martin tossed around potential names like “Tiger Lager” and “Mike’s Stout”.

Not only can the brewery benefit the patrons at Lod Cook, but it can also benefit students in the Food Science Department, Finley said.

“It is absolutely a money maker,” he said. “As a department, we would like to be able to operate it because there would be a certain amount of profitability in it. We would have a course that our students would take in brewing beer.”

Finley said the brewery could be operational within two years.

“There are schools that have wineries on campus, so it’s not unprecedented,” Finley said. “I think we could produce some very high quality beer that would be appealing to people and incorporate the learning process at the same time.”

That's one of the coolest things I've ever heard. Can't imagine it would be anything but a huge hit with students. They need to work on those names, though.

Do you guys have any type of on-campus bar or anything? We have a little sports bar called Orange & Brew at our Union. Something like that would would accompany a brewery perfectly.

we use to have a bar in the union but that was killed a few years ago when we were trying to fix our party school image

it seems like this idea would be particularly successful in the SEC, considering that we are widely accepted as the most passionate fanbases...id figure support for such a venture would be through the roof

Like I said, I can't imagine that it wouldn't have huge support from the students, at least. It would never happen at Florida barring a new president. Our good old Mormon president likes to prevent drinking wherever possible.

No, on campus too. I think he just doesn't know about Orange & Brew. We have "designated drinking zones" on campus for gameday. You can be 45 and walking with a beer in your hand on gameday and get arrested. Not just cited, full-blown arrested.

It really makes no sense to me that we can have an on-campus bar and yet we have the most ridiculous gameday restrictions.

where in the union is it relative to the bowling alley or wendy's

1. It's a historic place. I mean, it's nothing like it used to be, but my dad remembers going to it to hang out back when he was here. And, for what it's worth, the name was changed for a bit before we got here, but they changed it back. I'd be willing to bet the name change was to get away from "Brew", since that makes people think of beer.

2. As I said, it's nothing like it used to be. Even at night, it doesn't seem to be too busy the few times I've gone to the Union at the time. No point in going through all the hoopla for closing it down.

And I mean, it's 0.01% of what UCF's on campus bar is... which is right by their stadium, btw. Now THAT is an on campus bar.

While my own thoughts about LSU are pretty well known, I would have to say this would be a very cool thing. I know that this will be an everyday type thing, but when it comes to sports, it isn't like the beer isn't there already anyway. Maybe if they come up with LSUBrew, the school can make some money off the tailgating fare as well.
