(AP Photo) On a hitter's night in Omaha in the first game of the National Championship Series, the LSU Tigers baseball team managed to come out on top in a game for the ages. The Tigers pulled off a fantastic ninth inning comeback on a two RBI double by D.J. LeMahieu to stay alive and send the game to extra innings.
The night got off to a terrific start for LSU, as the Tigers took an early 1-0 lead on a solo homerun by Ryan Schimpf in the second at bat of the game. Starting pitcher Louis Coleman cruised through the first three innings, keeping Texas scoreless before things started to unwind in the fourth inning. Texas launched three solo homeruns in the bottom of the 4th inning to take a 3-1 lead. LSU tied the game at three on a two RBI triple from Jared Mitchell in the top of the 6th inning. But Coleman ran into trouble again in the bottom of the sixth inning, surrendering another solo homerun and then giving up a second run on a wild pitch, to allow the Texas lead to go to 5-3. LSU's D.J. LeMahieu and Texas' Connor Rowe both launched solo shots over the wall in the seventh inning to make the score 6-4 Texas heading into the top of the 9th inning. The LSU Tigers were down to their final out when LeMahieu got his biggest hit of the year, a two RBI double that tied the game at six apiece. The game went into extra innings and neither team could manage to bring a run home in the 10th inning, despite a bases loaded, one out opportunity for LSU. The Tigers made up for it in the top of the 11th when D.J. LeMahieu got on base again with a leadoff walk. LeMahieu stole second and advanced to third as the throw to second sailed into center field. With two outs, LSU's Mikie Mahtook stepped to the plate and belted a single up the middle, sending LeMahieu home for the game-winning run. LSU Tigers releiver Matty Ott picked up the win for the Tigers after pitching three nearly perfect innings at the end of the game. The Tigers now sit just one more win away from their sixth NCAA Baseball National Championship. Game 2 will get underway at 7:00 PM ET tomorrow night. |
