Designated hitter Matt Gaudet has leads LSU in homeruns (5) and RBIs (15) and has helped the No. Tigers jump out to a perfect 9-0 start to the season. (LSU Photo) The No.1 LSU Tigers (9-0, 0-0) have opened the season as well as everyone expected, winning their ninth straight game Friday night against Brown to remain unbeaten in the 2010 season.
LSU has remained perfect thanks to good hitting from the front part of the order and a solid performance so far from the pitching staff.
Three LSU hitters in the lineup are hitting at least .400, led by catcher Micah Gibbs, who is hitting .455 on the season, with five extra-base hits and 10 RBIs.
Designated hitter Matt Gaudet leads the Tigers in homeruns and RBIs, with five shots out of the park and 15 runners batted in.
Even without ace pitcher Anthony Ranaudo, who is out with a stress injury in his elbow, the Tigers have managed to remain perfect throughout the first three weeks of the season.
The Tigers have relied on some young pitchers early on in the season and they have performed very well. The LSU pitching staff has given up 83 hits, while striking out 75 batters during their nine-game winning streak.
"With the young guys, you've got to keep running them out there," head coach Paul Mainieri said. "You're sitting on the edge of your seat when they're pitching because they haven't proved yet over a long period of time what they're going to do. We've got a lot of innings to pitch, so these guys are going to have to pitch for us."
After knocking off Pepperdine on Thursday night and Brown on Friday night, the Tigers are in position to win the LSU Tournament that they are hosting this weekend in Baton Rouge.
They will face Pepperdine again tonight before taking on Brown on Sunday in the three-team round-robin style tournament.
"This weekend will provide our team with a tremendous challenge," Mainieri said. "We'll certainly have to be at our best to win these games." |
