The Arkansas Razorbacks and Mississippi State Bulldogs will battle for the SEC West division title after Saturday's games put the two into a first-place tie. (AP Photo) After losing to the Auburn Tigers (13-14, 4-8) on Saturday night, the Arkansas Razorbacks (14-13, 7-5) basketball team fell back into a tie atop the SEC West standings with the Mississippi State Bulldogs (19-8, 7-5).
The two teams split their regular season meetings with each team winning on its home court. Now, they'll battle each other down the stretch for SEC Tournament seeding.
While neither has a realistic shot at the overall SEC title, getting a first-round bye and the top seed in the SEC Tournament could be key to making the NCAA Tournament.
“Your team understands, you’ve got to go win," Mississippi State coach Rick Stansbury said following his team's buzzer-beating win over LSU on Saturday. "Absolutely, it was a must win for us. I didn’t even have to say it.”
The Bulldogs are on the bubble at the moment and could earn an at-large berth with a few more wins, but Arkansas has no such luxury.
To earn their second bid to the Big Dance under head coach John Pelphrey, the Razorbacks will have to win the SEC Tournament.
Coming out on top of the Bulldogs in the SEC West standings will go a long way toward making that possible. |
