Ole Miss DE Kentrell Lockett (top left) blocks a game-tying PAT attempt by Florida. On a weekend riddled with college football upsets, the Florida Gators couldn't quite manage to keep their name off the list. In what amounted to a lethargic outing for the Gators, unranked Ole Miss was able to sneak out of the Swamp with a narrow 31-30 win, only the second time that the Gators have lost at home under Coach Urban Meyer. The Rebels signaled their intent to be competitive in the game early on, scoring on a 1 yard run by quarterback Jevan Snead late in the third quarter. However, the Gators seemed well on their way to recovery, dominating the possession and the scoreboard in the second quarter. Florida notched their first points on a 32 yard Jonathan Phillips field goal early in the second quarter. The Gator defense played well throughout the quarter and quickly gave the ball back to Tim Tebow and the offense.
Tebow and company drove down the field scoring on a 43 yard pass from Tebow to wide receiver Percy Harvin. Unfortunately for the Gators the play might have been a foreshadowing of the atrocious third quarter. Tebow's pass was very near picked off by Kendrick Lewis, bouncing out of his hands before falling into Harvin's in the open space. The Gators wouldn't get so lucky on offense for the rest of the game. Tebow scored on a 1 yard run late in the second half to put the Gators up 17-7. However, Ole Miss quickly drove down the field and was in sure position to get at least 3 points. A few penalties by Ole Miss and a Gator stop or two saw the Gators go into the half without the Rebels capitalizing on the possession and the Gators went to the locker room with all of the momentum. Marcus Tillman and Cassius Vaughn celebrate after Tillman recovered a Tim Tebow fumble. However, only two plays into the second half, things took a turn for the worse for the Gators. Percy Harvin fumbled on a run up the middle and Ole Miss lineback Patrick Trahan recovered. A few plays later kicker Joshua Shene knocked a 33 yard field goal through to cut the deficit to 7 points. Things got even worse for the Gators when Tebow botched an exchange and fumbled on the first play of the drive, giving Marcus Tillman and Ole Miss the ball at the Gator 18 yard line. Ole Miss converted a long third down play to Cordera Eason, who took it in 18 yards for the touchdown, tying the game at 17. The Rebels struck again on a long 72 yard drive, capped by a 40 yard run to the right side by Dexter McCluster, giving the Rebels a 24-17 lead. The Gators answered quickly, scoring on a 9 play, 49 yard drive that ended in a 1 yard Tim Tebow touchdown run, once again tying the game. After a few more drives stalled for each team, Florida looked to be back in control. They had forced Ole Miss into a 3rd and 7 situation, deep in Rebel territory. However, Snead and company had other plans for the Swamp. The crowd of 90,000 plus was utterly silenced, as Snead completed a pass doen the left side to Shay Hodge, who took it 86 yards for the go-ahead score. Shene converted the extra point to put the Rebels ahead 31-24. Tebow and the Gators went right to work thoughn, going almost 70 yards in just under two minutes and scoring on a 15 yard run by Percy Harvin. The extra point was blocked by Ole Miss defensive end Kentrell Lockett, and the Swamp once again fell silent, as the Gators were now down 31-30. Florida's defense once again came up with a big stop and Tebow and the Gator offense would have one more shot to put the game away. The Gators quickly got to work, firing a few short passes and picking up a couple of first downs. However, the drive stalled when two passes fell just out of the reach of receivers, on plays that would have surely been touchdowns. Brandon James picked up 9 yards on third down to set up Florida with a key 4th and 1 situation. Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt celebrates after the Rebels shocked the #4 Gators. Coach Meyer elected not to send on kicker Jonathan Phillips, who has been perfect on field goals so far this season, to attempt a 49 yard game-winning field goal. Instead Meyer turned to the teams unquestioned leader and short yardage specialist, Tim Tebow. Tebow took the ball but was hit in the backfield, falling just short of the first down marker. Ole Miss quarterback Jevan Snead took a knee as joyous shouts and Gator chomps rang out from the Rebel sideline. Coach Houston Nutt scored his first marquee victory against the #4 ranked Gators in highly improbable fashion. Now, the Gators must try to regroup and stay focused on making it to Atlanta. Tebow promised the nation that they would never see a team that will play harder than Florida will the rest of the season. It might not matter for the Gators, though. Ole Miss' stunning upset could have just knocked the Gators out of National Championship contention. It also could have jump-started a new era for Ole Miss football. |
