The Florida Gators football team dismissed redshirt freshman defensive tackle Gary Brown on Friday afternoon.

Brown was suspended indefinitely on Monday after being arrested early Sunday morning. He allegedly struck one woman across the face with "an open hand" and scratched another woman's arm when they asked him to leave a party in Gainesville.

According to Alachua Country Jail records, Brown was charged with two counts of misdemeanor battery and was released on his own recognizance on Monday.

“Gary Brown has had a history during his time here of not meeting a set of expectations we have for the student athletes in our football program and therefore he is no longer part of our program,” Florida associate athletic director of communications Steve McClain told the St. Petersburg Times on Friday afternoon.

Brown is a former 5-star recruit at defensive tackle and was expected to compete for time in the starting rotation at defensive tackle in 2010.

He is the third former 5-star defensive tackle recruit to leave Florida in the past two years.

Torrey Davis left the team in March citing personal reasons after having trouble off the field for the majority of his time in Gainesville.

John Brown also left the program in March after struggling academically at Florida. He is now playing for the Tennessee Volunteers.

No excuse for hitting a woman (open or closed handed)... that's at the top of my list of hated things. I hope these guys can keep their noses clean while Meyer is gone to make things a little bit easier for everyone over there in Gainesville.

I just wish we could recruit a 5-star defensive tackle that didn't get kicked off the team or fail out. That's three straight 5-stars since the 2007 class that are no longer part of the team. Here's to hoping Sharriff Floyd can buck the trend.

Where is Floyd from? For some reason, I'm thinking he's from the Tampa area, but I'm too lazy to look it up.

He's from Pennsylvania and he was a pretty big get for the Gators. One of the only real shockers for us this class when he announced at the Army All-American Bowl. Most of the Gator insiders thought we had a decent chance, but no one outside of the Gator camp really thought he was seriously looking at us.

The good news is we have plenty of experienced bodies at defensive tackle with both starters returning. The bad thing is that Brown was expected to push for a starting spot there this year. He's ridiculously talented and it wouldn't shock me to see him end up on another SEC team when it's all said and done.

Well, I wasn't even close... I think I remember him signing, but I didn't realize who it was. Did it come down to Michigan State, Florida and possibly Ohio State?

Pretty sure it was Ohio State, Florida and South Carolina. He chose Florida when most thought when he was going to THE Ohio State University.

Okay... I don't know who I'm thinking of, then.
